Avoid Fedora Horror: Tips to Rocking this Hat the RIGHT Way

When worn correctly, Fedoras are an easy way to 'pimp your wardrobe.' I am absolutely in love with these hats and hunt down the most unique styles I can find. However, before my addiction started, I used to peep these hats and were too afraid to buy one because I didn't know how or where to wear it.  Then I had an awakening: Who cares about how I'm "supposed" to wear a Fedora, I'm gonna make it work for MY STYLE. These tips are designed to get your creative juices running and remove any hesitation you may have about rocking a Fedora.

Okay, so baby steps....take a trip to the mall and try on a few fedoras just to get the feel it. Once you've flirted with the idea, go ahead and purchase what I call a "beginner" hat first. My favorite places for affordable hats are XXI, H&M, and Target (<--yep!). Now, the disclaimer:
Warning: You MUST have a certain degree of swag to rock a fedora correctly. Otherwise, you’ll look like you just fell out of a Huckleberry Finn novel—no bueno! Confidence is key!!!!

FIT: Make sure the brim of the Fedora sits snuggly on your head. You don’t want the hat to be too big, since that will cover your beautiful face. Too small, and you’ll just look like you’re trying way too hard to pull off the look.

STYLE: There are various styles and colors of Fedora hats (see slideshow below). Choose the color and fabric depending on the vibe you’re going for. Many styles include printed ribbons, feathers, flowers, etc. Also, make sure to choose a hat with a deep crease at the top for an authentic look. Embellishments also add instant sass to a fedora.

OUTFIT: A fedora looks best with a minimal, neutral outfit. The hat should be the spotlight, so I suggesting toning down your overall attire to allow your Fedora take center stage. For example, wear a simple black or white t-shirt, jeans, and pumps or wedges for effortless chic. Take it one step further and mimic the menswear fashion trend by pairing your Fedora with a tank top, high-waist pants/shorts, Oxford shoes, and suspenders. The only wrong way to wear a Fedora is to do too much your outfit which makes the look appear messy and completely overdone (e.g. several colors and prints, overwhelming jewelry, ill-matching shoes, etc.).

ACCESSORIES: Since we’ve decided that a low-key outfit is more flattering with this hat,  focus on perfecting your makeup and accessories. Wear complimentary, and unique, jewelry as a subtle but impressive way to spice the look up. Earring such as big, bold studs or over-sized hoops, tear-drop, etc. Consider necklaces and/or bracelets mimic the fabric, ribbon, or embellishments on the hat.  Oversized bracelets are also a good choice.

MAKEUP: Since the Fedora will draw attention to your face, make sure your eyebrows are neatly arched and use eyeliner or shadow to add dimension.  Depending on the tone of your outfit, use a neutral or attention-grabbing color on your lips. I personally love the look of deeply black lined eyes, feathery lashes, and bold red lipstick while wearing a fedora.

HAIR: The beauty of a Fedora is that you can cover up a bad hair day and no one will ever know your secret! I love to wear my Fedora with a low, side ponytail for a romantic look. You can also wear all of your hair down; either straight, wavy, or curly. Another lovely look is to pin you hair up and rock it with no hair help at all, which solidifies you as a certified “bad chick.” I’ve remixed this look by tucking all of my hair into the hat, then pull out a little piece from the back (similar to a “tail”). Cute!!

So I hopes this helps! Wear it YOUR way, but remember that less is more with a Fedora.  Shopping, beach, BBQ party, doesn’t matter where you go----as long as you work your brown sugar swag under that hat!
